About FaceShastra

What this is, and what it is not

FaceShastra is an educational rendering of Sāmudrika Lakṣaṇa — the classical Indian tradition of reading the body's features, set down in the Bṛhat Saṃhitā of Varāhamihira in the sixth century CE, with supporting material in the Garuḍa and Agni Purāṇa.

What we do

We measure the proportions of a face — the three divisions, the seats of the brow, eyes, nose, lips and chin — and show, finding by finding, what the classical corpus historically said about each one. Every finding pairs the exact measurement taken with the textual reading it corresponds to. The product is a structured, cited document: 41 findings across the 11 traditional seats, on screen and as a downloadable PDF.

What we deliberately are not

We make no predictions and give no advice. There is no scientific basis for inferring character or future events from facial proportions, and we say so on every page. The value offered is cultural and educational: access to what a significant Sanskrit text tradition actually says, organised around your own features rather than an abstract diagram.

We also exclude complexion and skin tone from every measurement. The classical texts contain judgements about fairness of complexion; we do not reproduce them and will not add them.

Privacy by architecture

The photograph is measured inside your browser and never uploaded. Our servers only ever receive numerical proportions that cannot be turned back into a face. We collect no names, emails or phone numbers unless you choose to have your PDF emailed to you.
